Apple Co-Dependence Reaches An All-Time High.

Apple's announcements last week that it would begin charging for its
newly branded .Mac suite of tools and that Mac OS X 10.2 would cost
users $120 have caused co-dependence among Mac users to soar to
unprecedented heights.
In a scathing rebuke published on MacInTouch on Friday, graphic designer
Karl Hansen demanded Apple reinstate the 17 mac.com email addresses he
has been using for free.
"Apple will never see another red cent from me or, I suspect, many other
graphics professionals, as long as it tries to hold us hostage," Hansen
wrote. "I will not pay for email addresses and I will not pay for Mac OS
X as it should have been to begin with. If these two things are not
rectified, Apple leaves me no choice but to switch to Wintel."
Over the weekend, however, Hansen completed the sign-up process for .Mac
and added the additional 16 email addresses and pre-ordered three copies
of Mac OS X 10.2 for his two Power Macs and his PowerBook G4. The total
cost to Hansen was $570.
"I don't know what came over me," Hansen said. "I was so angry last week
and I said some things that maybe I shouldn't have. Sure, I still think
Apple's wrong, but I'm willing to admit that I was wrong, too."
"I was a fool to think I could leave Apple. I'll never leave Apple. I
love Apple and Apple still loves me. I just know it."
Macs-Ahoy columnist Randall Corby also experienced a change of heart
over the weekend. Corby's "That's The Fact, Mac!" column on Thursday
predicted Apple would capitulate on its pricing when users failed to
sign up for .Mac and failed to order 10.2.
Corby himself paid for both on Saturday night.
"Apple wouldn't charge me if I didn't deserve it," Corby explained. "I
see that now. I just hope Apple takes me back."
Psychologist Brent Schmahl has noticed symptoms of classic co-dependence
in a number of postings to web sites and message boards in the past
several days.
"People feel they are being mistreated, but they're still coming back
for more," Schmahl said. For his part, Schmahl is certain Apple has some
great features up its sleeve for future .Mac enhancements. Schmahl
himself upgraded his iTools account to .Mac, paying the additional $10
for the email address he uses for his cat, Scratches.
