You know what... I just started having this problem with my 3c589D as well.
Tres bizzare. I got rid of my hub and moved to an 8-port 10/100 switch.
Is your switch 10/100 as well? Maybe this is part of the problem. I've seen
some strange things happen with switches and autosensing Ethernet equipment
before.
In my case, I just started using my RangeLAN2 card in my Newton all the time,
even when it's right on my desk. Too bad not everyone can use this solution
:)

Subject: [NTLK] Farallon problem with switches
I just moved from hubs to switches in my home network. When I try to connect
with my Farallon card it fails to connect. The light blinks once and goes
out. After the 'Connecting to Internet' slip goes away, the error message:
'Unable to connect with DHCP server' appears. Connecting a second time
immediately after succeeds. If you wait longer, it fails to connect again.
It seems that the initial connection to the switch if problematic. Never had
this problem with my hubs. Suggestions?
