Very likely is your serial port configuration not well done. It could also
be that another program or service, which runs in the background of XP
occupies the serial port and thus NCU can't get a connection. You should at
least get a serial connection with kbd or maybe even with the hyperterminal
and an appropriate Newton terminal emulation.
Do you connect via Modem at the serial port to the internet or do you have
some other program installed, e.g. A fax receiver which is always connected
to the serial port? Could you start XP without starting services and then
try again?
