[NTLK] Thinking of Switching

Fellow Newtonians,

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for their comments and advice
regarding my possible switch to another platform. I have to admit the reason
I was thinking of switching was manifold. An incident last week left me
without access to any of my Names, Notes, Dates, Geeksafe and so on due to a
glitch with the Newton not reading the card. Naturally I panicked. I had no
backup that was up to date enough and restoring what I did have to a backup
Newton was not working. NCU is not the greatest and trying to export in the
past has produced less than stellar results when viewing the final results
on Outlook or some other Desktop based PIM. I was at a loss. Knowing that
Palm and Pocket PC users are able to do without their handheld made me stop
and think a moment. Did I want a stand alone handheld with limited
connection capabilities to my PC/Mac; did I want a connected organizer such
as the Palm; or go as far as getting a mini-PC in the form of a Pocket PC
with all the bells and whistles. Being a big gadget freak (my friends think
it’s a sickness. If it is I want no cure) I have had one or the other at one
point in time. Currently I have a several Newtons ranging from the OMP to
the MP 2100 and eMate; a Vadem Clio; a Kyocera Palm Smartphone (I’m
upgrading to a Samsung i300); and just recently gave away a Philips NINO.
All of them have their pluses and deltas. It was the Newtons lack of
connection capabilities, of transferring my Names especially in their
entirety that made me wince.

Will I change? In viewing everyone’s thoughts and feelings and reading the
archives and especially looking at the money I’ve invested in my crop of
Newtons. I think I will not. I bought my MP 2100 when it was just barely
axed by Apple. So to see people buying them like hotcakes off of eBay for
$200 a pop when I got mine for a $1000 each. I just have to smile and say
“More power to you”. I look at the miles of cables, the printers, the
digital cameras, the SOFTWARE I have…I just have to think, I’m not doing
this all over again with another handheld!!! I will wait for that Outlook
syncing program or just beam each and every name, note and thingamabop to my
Palm with BackTalk. What it boils down to in the end is that Newton just
kicks ass. It has the greatest interface and is so easy to use, not to
mention the screen real estate. Even my Vadem Clio enabled with Calligrapher
and other hoots and hollers can’t compete. What handheld out there today
will still let you use double AA batteries for days on end? What other
handheld will store your info even after the batteries conk?

So here’s what I did. I took out any and all nonessential information and
program I NEVER use off the internal store and transferred any Name, Note,
etc. etc. to the internal store and then did a full backup to three cards. I
switched out the 32 MB card which seemed to be causing some of the quirks
and used a smaller 20MB card instead. I can replace the packages if they get
deleted (as someone here had mentioned) but the backup to the cards will at
least allow me to save my life should another glitch occur. Any inform can
be saved to PC easily enough after beaming them to a Palm and hotsyncing. (I
haven’t yet got my Newt to sync to Palm Desktop just yet). So with a few
changes and some modifications in the way I use the MP 2100, the Newt will
yet prevail in my life as No. 1.

In short, have you guys lost me? No. I’m staying.

Ermin
