Open the lid, fold it back, and slide it sideways under the vertical
elastic and the diagonals. It doesn't hold the Newton very securely, but
that's how it works. I considered using velcro, but I found that just by
being careful about how I open the case, the Newton's secure enough for me
to use it.

In case you haven't discovered this yet, the hard flap that the Newton
rests on can be pulled up from the back of the case. There's a smaller
flap attached that can fold down and prop the Newton up at about a
45-degree angle. And there are three pockets you can use for PCMCIA cards
(although if you use the center one, you interfere with some velcro).
