Hmmm, I wonder. Some elements of the iApps seem Newt-like to me.
Address Book seems to be structured a lot like the Newton's, and its
data can be available to other apps. iTunes and iPhoto do away the the
business of loading and saving files, and just like the Newton, your
stuff is simply there. I'm hoping (hope it's not just wishing) that OS
X is heading in the direction of being more Newt-like.
