"The web" is usually taken to refer to the "World Wide Web" (WWW) -- the
HTTP protocol, HTML, that kind of stuff. It was invented by Tim Berners-
Lee in the early 90s. Other internet protocols and services such as mail,
FTP, Archie, Gopher etc. are much older, but that's not "the web".
