Re: [NTLK] Newton Linux...

This is getting more interesting. Remember the Newton is a virtual machine.
Surely running Newton OS and applications on Palm or PocketPC hardware would
be more to the point than running Linux on a MessagePad? I know you folks
mostly don't like the smaller form factor of the palm size devices, but it
could also run on the Tablet PC... Hopefully the situation where there are
no pen devices in between the 3.5 inches of an iPAQ and 8.4 inches of a PC
tablet can't last forever?

I remember one of the Newton engineers talking at a Newton Developers
meeting in the mid 90s. The vision then was that Newton OS could run on
anything from a device the size of a wristwatch to that of a flip chart. JVM
is a available on almost any kind of hardware from a mobile phone up. Why
not NVM?

It wouldn't have to run in a window, could take over the whole screen the
way it does in the Newt, and the way JVM does in a mobile phone. I would
love to be able to use Newton Toolkit to develop applications for my Fujitsu
Stylistic!

Hi,

Linux on the Newt would be cool but for future-proofing the idea of
creating
a sort of GNU Newton OS (a la GNUStep) would possibly be even cooler.

Imagine being able to run a Newton-alike-OS on modern ARM, Transmeta or
x86
hardware.

You would loose the cool factor of the Newt in its original form but you
would have
the benefit of having an OS that would outlive the original.

Raj.
