When I purchased my Newtons I was worried about this type of thing. Since the supply of Newtons seems to on it's last leg, I was worried that if my NiMH battery were to run out would I ever be able to get a new one? I know they can be reconditioned (right word?) or recharged, whatever it's called, but I certainly am NOT that handy and would worry about somehting exploding on me! Solution? I bought the AA Battery holder for mine. Hopefully, we will always be able to purchase AA batteries, so I should never have a problem! ~I hope! However, before you know it batteries will become extinct too as technology zooms forward!

Depends on which datasheet you read and what you consider
"heavy use". You can expect a couple of hundreds of full
discharge cycles. Sony for example claims 800 for some brands.
Of course, how often you charge depends on what you are doing
with the Newton, so the "how long" question can't really be answered.
Also, batteries don't drop dead after their specified number of discharge
cycles, they just get worse over time.
