I use a Mac application called TextSoap <www.unmarked.com> to convert
and/or remove the miscellenaneous characters in the Setext version of a
weekly newsletter I subscribe to, and I create Newton books from those
files. (I set up a function to do all the formatting I need to do all
at once.) Works great. (A Windows version is also available.)
