I use an AirPort base station with a space in the SSID that has worked just
fine with my Newton and Hiroshi's driver for several months and over several
versions.

Perhaps there's some difference between your configuration and mine that's
the source of the problem? It sounds like you have an Apple AirPort base
station? Mine Base station is running V3.84 of the firmware.
