The OS uses it all to decompress packages, provide free memory (heap) to
NewtonScript and C++ tasks, etc etc etc.

Uhh, at lower bitrates than that, all you'd get is static. The Newton's
1K codec is the same codec that GSM cell phones use. It's optimized for
voice. You can't get any better than it.
