Not sure about the sound - assume you've
confirmed under the Preferences Sound (under
Prefs in Extras) panel that sound is set to
Internal Speaker and that the sounds effects
check boxes are checked (i.e. enabled)?

You might try "recentering" the contrast. I
believe if you set the slider so that the
screen appears to be normal or at a value
you'd like then double tap on the word
Contrast and you should get a panel asking
to confirm recentering the slider with this
value. The list archives likely have more
details if needed.
