I received a reply from an ex Marine type regarding these cases. I
thought it was interesting. . .

"I have some info on your "ARMY-issue" newtons. They were part of a
USMC sponsored technology experiment(the name escapes me) in the Middle
east
Late 1990's that sought to equip small teams of Marines with high tech
communications gear and computers and have them conduct recon operations
against much larger forces. They used cell phones and Newtons to send
messages requesting re-supply, artillery fire support, close air
support, to
hammer larger conventionally equipped forces competing against them.
The Newtons (130's or 2000's I think) worked well but were somewhat
delicate for normal field use (dusty/muddy/hot/cold/being dropped or
fallen
on etc). While the newton was not retained for use the concept was
adequately
proven."

Ah the Newton strikes again. A little tech wonder WAY ahead of its
time. We actually got about 60 Trimble GPS PC Cards (3 receiver) that
were part of this lot as well. They apparently used the Newtons as
mobile GPS units. One of my partners ended up with the GPS units and
antenna. I will get some pricing on that if possible. If you have any
interest let me know and I will see if I can help you out.

Thanks,

Danny
