I just wrote up a justification for one of the spendy real-time
units, so perhaps typed too much and only the last paragraph of my
post was needed :) If we get it, you'll hear me dancing :) You can
get a LOT of neat functionality for $100 to $150 now; I agree that
the price would have to be "right" for me to want to use older PC
card GPS in real-world situations, as neat as it would be on the
Newt. Glad to hear your experience with WAAS is positive.

>BTW, Brian, what exactly do you do?

Daytime I work at Pfizer, but for as part of my wife's research
program we go down to SE Mexico and work with tarantulas in the
field; ecological physiology/ natural history emphasis.

BTW I have talked and emailed with 2 people at Fieldworker
(www.fieldworker.com) now, they might be worried that even if they
release Fieldworker again for the Newton as unsupported (you
apparently cannot buy it at this time) they will get calls for
support, need legal boilerplate, etc. Persons involved in the
decision are on vacation for a bit so I'll post if I ever hear
anything definitive either way about Newton Fieldworker reappearing
in any form whatsoever. Thanks for those who emailed when I first
posted about this in July or so.

Persons wishing to play around could perhaps design their own
stationery or Filepad dbase and use GPS Monitor 1.2 (available a few
places, check google). to paste coordinates into record fields.

I just noticed- the old FieldNote for Newton (not Fieldworker) web
site has more code and components
than I recall seeing available in the past, that software might be
useful- it does TSIP, NMEA both. See
<http://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/projects/mobicomp/Fieldwork/Software/#newton>.
that might need to get onto UNNA. It's been perhaps a year since I
looked last and I sure don't recall that they had all the components
plus source, available for download before. I'm going to try and
play with that software and my borrowed eTrek sometime.
