A quick update on this...
In addition to my Newton, I also happen to have an 802.11b-capable
PocketPC (ugh) which also had trouble connecting to the Airport Extreme
Base Station at first. It too connected to the older base station
without a hitch. In its wireless settings, I found a box labeled "Network
Authentication (Shared Key)". After checking this box, it worked fine
with the AEBS.
This strikes me as weird, because it is a separate checkbox from the one
that turns WEP itself on and off. I'm guessing there are two different
authentication methods for WEP, and that my SMC 2632W and D-Link DWL-810+
have older chipsets or firmware, and they don't speak "Shared Key".
This is definitely something Apple has changed in the firmware for the
AEBS because all of these devices could get onto my old ABS just fine with
128-bit WEP.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to fix the problem. I can't find any
option in the Airport Admin Utility not to use Shared Key authentication,
and there don't appear to be any more recent firmware updates for the
client devices. The only thing that works is to disable WEP across the
board, and that's just not viable for the long-term.
If anyone knows what's going on with this "Shared Key" business, and why
WEP authentication would be different between Airport and Airport Extreme,
please speak up.
