Well as far as Pretec is concerend, this is from their website:
/startquote
Q: I reset my Newton while the flash card is still inserted, is the card
damaged?

A: Please do not hit RESET on MessagePad while the flash card is still
inserted. The RESET operation may cause damage to the flash card and the
card may not function properly afterward.

Q: Which flash card supports Apple MP 120/130?

A: If your MessagePad system supports Newton OS 2.0 or higher, please use
our FAD series flash cards.

Q: How do I use Pretec's FR2 or FAD Flash Memory Card with Newton MessagePad

A: Newton MessagePad supports type I or type II Flash memory cards, which
enable you to expand data and program storage.

A FR2 or a FAD card plugged into your palmtop is designated as a folder; and
you use it just like you would use a floppy disk on your desktop.

<CAUTION>

If your Newton MessagePad fails to respond to keystrokes or otherwise
behaves unusually and you need to do a system reset (also called rebooting
the computer ), it is strongly recommended that you remove the Flash memory
card before system reset, otherwise there is a chance it may damage the card
causing data loss.

And I have done resets many many many times with the cards in place for
years on a 120, 130 and 2000 and never had a problem. It is real pain
though to remove the cards every time you need to reset, and somtimes if you
have a total lockup, you CAN'T tell the card to stop and if you remove it
then you WILL damage it or the data. :/ Guess I have just been lucky.
