Ah, I don't have a DVD so no comparative examples were to hand.

I tried a 0.2mm sheet of clear, shiny plastic over a barcode and that worked
fine, so did a double-thickness of the same stuff.

Two layers of cloudy polythene bag (0.13mm) were no obstacle but the clear
plastic of a PCMCIA jewel case (1.13mm) was.

The limit seems to be 0.6mm of anything that is more or less clear.

Books and software are perfect candidates for using a scanner but I too have
some difficulty scanning some of the equipment labels which have a speckled,
shiny surface and tightly-packed bars.
