i think it was all about extending the newts capabilities the same way
as the USB standard would have done that, problem is that the mp2k was
drafted in 1996, before the USB standard was finalised.

so in order to use an auto-sensing, multifunction port, apple stuck to
a proprietary non-compromise solution, as usually...
