Even in the cases with the elastic straps I've used Velcro. The hinge on the screen door is rather fragile and putting extra stress on it (such as using it to hold the Newt in place in the case) will result in cracking at the hinges and eventual failure.
Radio Shack has packets of Velcro strips. I've found that one strip cut into three parts will hold an MP2100 in a case quite securely (certainly more securely than the elastic).
