[NTLK] Showing it off

I brought my new-old MP 130 at work the other day and showed it off around. I work for a die-hard software company where everything runs on Linux, Unix and Windows (but Windows is "for the weak who need a GUI", as I've heard a couple of times); the kind of place where everybody seems to be running around with a spiffy new never-seen-before prototype of some kind that makes your lifew whatever easier, where Apple hardware is generally laughed at, and where, above all, brand recognition is essential (Dell not Compaq, RedHat never whatever-other-Linux-brand, Apple is always a no-no-no). Mind you, I love this company and the people I work with, mostly because I'm the design center by myself (UI designer & webmaster, graphics, what-not; figures). They're easy to shock. Just bring in anything with an Apple logo on it.

So, of course, I had to slip my 130 in my coat's pocket one morning before going to the office. Funny when I think this thing is 1996 in all it's glory, because I had at least 12 IT/marketing/project managers/the CTO go "what the hell is that?" when walking by my desk. They all played around with it, tested the HWR, played with NewtBattleship, commented on its size (most found it too heavy, until they were told it's 1996 technology), most commented on the laughable serial interface (until they were told files usually range under the -25 kb when synching/backing-up), most turned it over and over looking for some high-speed connectivity port/slot/whatever (until they were told the slot on the side is not decorative, or even just some Apple-proprietary thing but a full-fledge PCMCIA slot, for 1996 that's still pretty insanely awesome). The best act of the play? "This thing must run on a full battery charge for less that 2 hours, right?", no sir, 4 standard AA batteries go on for at least a week, and that's only
because I'm using unsupported rechargeable batteries this thing wasn't meant to use.

Maybe this is an all very normal every-day routine, I just got a genuine kick out of it :)
