Doug (and everyone),

I fall squarely into the group you describe, as somebody who just (on
the sunday past) won my first newton via ebay. If I had not found
references to Newtontalk whilst googling for Newton resources, I would
have *loved* to recieve the email you describe. You can bet, however,
it would piss off some people since it may trigger well-honed
spam-deletion reflexes.

I'd agree with you that the majority of people new to the Newton
community (such as myself) are of a certain mindset. As such, a
carefully crafted, friendly letter might be just the trick. I mean,
you can *probably* expect both the net-savviness and geek quotient to be
fairly high with this group. These are likely to be people who can
appreciate online communities: USENET, weblogs, LISTSERVs, etc. The
mail to them would be quite welcome, especially once they checked out
the quality of discussion on newtontalk (4 days lurking here has been a
superinfomative trip -- I love it!). For a lot of newtonseekers, this
forum is the fulfills a goodly portion of what they desire in the newton
-- a hackable, community-supported, and _well-digested_ computing
platform. I'd bet that a lot of the GNU/Linux, BSD, and Mac crowd would
dig it -- they are used to community being an essintial part of
computing goodness.

But, then again, the people who would appreciate the mail the most are
likely to have found newtontalk on their own.

Whatever the mechanism of discovery, I'm glad to be here. I can tell
that I am going to enjoy my Newt all the more because of the people on
this list.
