[NTLK] Ongoing ethernet connection problems

OK, this is really starting to bug me. I have - at least I thought I had -
all the necessary packages on my upgraded 2000 to enable me to connect using
my 3Com Megahertz ethernet card model 3CCE589ET.

I've saved all of them in my Newt's internal store (ie Storage, as opposed
to Setup, Extensions etc) as follows:

3C589
Farallon Enet
Internet Setup (for which info reads: Newton Internet Setup Version 2.0,
Newton Internet Enabler Version 2.0, Installed components: modem, serial,
ethernet, PPP, SLIP, DHCP)
Internet Enabler Version 2.0
NIE Ethernet Module Version 2.0
z3ComDrv:clli

I've got two Macs which I'm trying to connect to: a 7300/200 PowerMac (OS
8.6) and a G3 350mhz iMac (OS 9.0). I've done what I think I should: eg Set
Appletalk to Ethernet, make sure that Newton Connection Utilities
preferences are set to Appletalk.

Each time the Newt looks for but cannot find the desktop computer. So here
are my questions:

1 Does the order you install components/packages on your Newt matter? If it
does, what is the correct order?

2 Do I have to note the name of my Mac's hard drive (eg Russ iMac) in Owner
Info as a new Worksite? Presumably this communicates info the Dock
procedure. Sometimes when I tap on Dock and pick the relevant worksite I get
the message: "The necessary connection options weren't filled in". Which
options? Where?

Anybody care to help? I've happily connected up MP120s and eMates to both of
these machines via serial cable and UCB/serial adapter respectively, but due
to being dongle-less, ethernet is my only hope for my 2000!

Yours in hope - and in the UK

Russ
