I do not know how this is realised in the Newt hardwarewise, but in fact
there is a connection from one of the pads to the battery that is used to
determine whether there is an alkaline in or not.
The pure presence of a thermistor between the two contacts is important for
the temperature reading, but not for recognising the battery type.

But from my experience most of the problems have a rather simple cause.
This might be bad contact in this case.
The springs may have lost tension or one of them might be broken.
But you can check this easily by opening your Newt and then openeing the
battery compartment.
If the Newt is open you already can see the two wires connected to the
contact springs.
