Except that until recently Applescript had no UI components.
It's pretty good as a glue language between tools, and with the
addition of Applescript studio, is now a decent development tool.

Hypercard was a lot of this way back when, and since they gave it away
was very pervasive in the Mac market.
Everyone wrote stacks.
This sort of penetration is something that AppleScript simply has not
achieved yet.
