It's about beating linear cards significantly, but I'm only talking
about my hopes here.

No, it won't be combined with FAT, as in: work on speed won't improve
FAT support's speed noticeably. Simply because FAT volumes are not
transactional and a big part of the speed increase is an optimization
possible because stores are transactional. However, reading or
writing a MP3 to a FAT partition will always be faster than reading
or writing it to a Newton store because the models are so different
and FAT is faster for big files.
