Hi Len

I apologize for the bad diagram. I reposted a new diagram after I realized
that the spaces where being stripped out. I'll include a more up to date
diagram of my network below. My setup is very similar to yours. I use the
850AV and the Dell laptop to connect to my Office VPN server. The 850AV
through a 2nd network card and the Dell through the router. I need this
because my router only allows one VPN passthru. My Mac handles both networks
perfectly well for my needs. I use TCP/IP through Network #2 and Appletalk
through network #1. I noticed that if I setup the emate and the 2100 to
search for a printer and reset the 840AV the printers will eventually show
in the chooser but the next time I try to connectit''s gone. I can however
print to the ethernet devices using the saved printer name. I don't have
this option however with Toolkit. Whenever I try to connect the inspector it
tries to find a new connection.

Subject: ethernet problems on MPs
Dear Mac user,
I just might be able to help you, since I am running a similar setup with my
Macs (OS 9.2.2 and 8.6), DSL, Apple's LocalTalk Bridge 2.1 , and an
AppleTalk LaserWriter and the MP 130.

My macs are all on a cable/DSL router, which puts them all on a LAN and the
LocalTalk bridge is used only to connect to the LaserWriter and the MP 130.
I initially had a problem with the Newton not seeing the Mac running the
LocalTalk bridge, but it was a case of needing to reboot with all the
LocalTalk devices powered up. After that there were no problems.
Incidentally, LocalTalk Bridge works fine all the way up to OS 9.2.2; at
least it does for me.

I am confused by your diagram as to what exactly is hooked up to the
LocalTalk Bridge, because it appears that your ethernet network #1 is coming
off the bridge and that the AppleTalk network for the MPs itself is directly
hooked up to the Quadra instead of through the software bridge. Also your
5300 is hooked up to the ethernet network #1, so you have to be using an
ethernet adapter in it. What kind?

The diagram shows that the Quadra is you internet computer. Is this correct,
or are you in reality using the 5300 (with an ethernet adapter)?

You also show that you have four ethernet devices: the WAN (cable
hookup/ethernet network #2), the 850AV, the 5300, and the LaserWriter. You
need to be using a cable/DSL router since there is no other way on a Mac to
handle multiple ethernet connections except by using a hub/switch/router
device. It looks like you are trying to use one of the Macs as a router,
which just won't work with the normal Mac OS's, since only one ethernet
adapter is ever recognized. In fact, this is due in part to same "rules"
which make it necessary to use a ethernet to localtalkbridge (either
hardware or software), which is that ethernet takes precedence over
localtalk. (And I specifically mean the hardware layer, not the software
layer, i.e., AppleTalk or TCP/IP.)

If this gets to your mailbox, since I didn't want it to on the group because
of its length, and I have reservations about your email address being
accessible (never seen one like that before, although I pretty much know
what "GoTo" is), please try to clarify the points I have brought up, and
I'll see if I can't help you straighten things out.

Oh, yeah, is this a new setup for you, or has it worked in the past. If it
is new, what have you added to the previously working setup?
