It sure would be nice to see this myth put to rest. Apart from
assumptions and speculation, there's really no reason to believe that
Jobs -- who is answerable to the Board of Directors and shareholders,
by the way -- discontinued the Newton products for any reason other
than to do so made good, solid business sense. (I think people put too
much stock into personality where Jobs is concerned, and ignore the
fact that he's made some sound business decisions since he returned to
Apple.)

While Apple was far from the brink of bankruptcy when Jobs returned
(another myth that should have been put to rest by now), the company's
efforts were being scattered in a number of different directions, and
the product line had grown large and unwieldy. All Steve Jobs did was
streamline the operation (in many ways completing transitions begun by
Gil Amelio), and bring some focus to the products that were the core of
the company, and the most profitable, the Mac and the Mac OS
(particularly the Mac OS, as efforts to produce a "next generation" OS
had all but stalled).
