If you use a fine wire such as a steel guitar string (E), you can drip
a tiny drop at a time of low viscosity oil next to the hinges. The oil
will spread and flow to where the problem lies (spring wind-up on the
shaft from too much friction). I used a Teflon filled hobby oil in a
needle tube but the needle is too big. I can feel a gentler, kinder,
lid opening force.
