Strangely though, I just happen to have installed NCU from the single
file download in classic today on OSX 10.3.3...

It went smoothly to my shock and amazement.

I am betting the multi disk image format is your problem. Make sure
all the disk images are pre mounted in the finder before running the
installer on disk 1?
