Hi Matt,
1) the PPC 6100 is for sure powerful enough to connect to your Newt
2) the connection is native via serial or AppleTalk
3) of course you can connect via Ethernet, you just need this little AUI
adaptor
I used to use my old pizza-box (PPC6100) until it died.
I loved it because of its form factor.
I had a copy of all the Newton packages and of course the backups of the
Newt data on the PPC.
If you use the 6100 for internet browsing as well, you have easy access to
Unna and therefore a direct way into your Newt.
I had NTK running on that machine and you can think of Newton Press or other
Newt related Apps as well.
To say it in one sentence: the connectivity between the Newt and the PPC is
just native, I never had a problem with that.
There are plenty of upgrades you can do for your 6100: for instance the G3
upgrade that I had as well. It is also easy to replace the built in HDD with
a larger capacity one (you may need a high density to 68 pin SCSI adaptor) I
did that as well.
The only bottleneck IMHO was the rather bare performance of the built in
graphic. But there are models that come already with built in video in/out
board and have a better graphics performance.
But of course you can also upgrade your 6100 in that respect.
So I decided to put in a better graphics board via a special adaptor.
That worked fine for quiet a while ...
Until the graphic board was killed due to overheating (finally it was rather
dense packed inside the poor 6100).
Unfortunately that failure propagated to the data bus and therefore to the
motherboard.
That was the bitter end of my beloved 6100.
To make it short: my recommendation is - if you like your PPC 6100, just
keep it and use it to connect your Newt as well.
Cheers
Johannes
