Since the external GPS devices as well as the internal PCMCIA cards
represent a serial interface that deliveres serial data (according NMEA), no
special driver is needed.
You can even use a simple monitor program to show the data transmitted from
the GPS.

I use a Garmin GPS mouse that is working perfect with the Newt (and also the
PC).
I use GPSMap and created a few maps (Europe, NL) also.
