For a start, do something like this:

If the spring inside the Newton won't push the pack
out when you release it, please refrain from prying
it out with a screwdriver, knife or other tool.
The front part of the pack (what you can see from the
outside when the pack is in the Newton) is glued to the
rest, but not that well. Using tools as a lever might
tear it off.
A better strategy is putting the Newton with the side
where the power switch is between thumb and index finger
of one hand, release the battery lock with another finger
of the same hand and, while keeping it released, slightly
pushing everything against the index finger of the
other hand.
Kind of like how you would get the first one or two
cigarettes out of a newly opened pack.

If that won't work, do what PCBMan describes.

Good luck. If you can't get it open, there are people out
there, including myself, who can do this for you. If you
live in Germany, there's almost nothing a decent bottle
of Laphroig single malt whisky won't get you ;-))

Or, if you happen to be at the WWNC, just bring it along.
