[NTLK] Dealing with file types

I find myself butting up against the same problem over and over again.
When creating RTF files using OS X programs such as Micro$oft Word or
Apple's own TextEdit, they are identified as RTF files in Finder... but
programs that run under Classic (such as Book Maker and Newton Press)
do not see these files at all: presumably because the OS 9.2 file type
is incorrect.

Once upon a time I used to have both AppleWorks and ResEdit installed,
either one of which would have been used to trick Classic into doing
what I want it to do (i.e., open the files!) but somewhere along the
process of installing/upgrading new versions of the OS and surviving
major disk crashes, they've become lost.

Is there a standard trick to doing this stuff that I'm not aware of? I
never used to use Classic until I got a Newton... ;)
