I'm planning on using a WiFi card but I have the same problem as you
-- I need to teach my Newton all about the WiFi card before I can use
it :P

I'm wondering what the cheapest method of initial data transfer (and
maybe a "backup" in case WiFi fails) to get my Newton's basic WiFi
packages installed is.

I checked around the NewtWIKI and found some help but I wanted an
opinion as I'm sure you do.
