Jon, all -

Does this appear to be a reasonable PB 1400?

Aha! Now I see... Go for the PB 1400 and get a PC card etherenet card...
Unfortunately, it will be difficult to find a good card. There aren't many.
You are in luck, however, as the 3Com EtherLInk III 3C589D works just fine
in it with the proper software hacks (which I have, btw). This is good
because it is fairly common, and also works in the Newton. :-) I highly
recommend the 1400 in this case.
