[NTLK] OT: Apologies (was: Hiroshi's driver isn't gone...)

Well, I've been out all weekend helping a friend do an "emergency" bathroom
remodel. I had no idea that my post regarding the contact with Hiroshi
would generate the kind of traffic it has.

I apologize for the concern that this has generated in the community.
Obviously, this was not my intent.

I was simply trying to do the right thing for a guy I have never met, who
doesn't in the least speak my language and has to run everything through a
translator. A fellow newtoneer that, despite the language barrier and the
impulse to move on from the platform, responded to the requests of many
gaijin Newtoneers and completed a driver for the world that would allow us
to use our Newtons wirelessly. He did it for little renumeration, with but
2 requests, that you respond back with your results of using the driver
with various cards, and that the driver not be distributed other than the
link on his page.

One of the things that's cool about this community is it's integrity
towards it's service providers and developers. If it's shareware, don't
ask for a code or a crack here. When you install a package, make sure and
drop a line to the developer and thank him for his work that made your life
easier or more fun. We have folks like Steve, Paul, Frank, Daniel, Sean,
Hiroshi, Victor, Grant, Rich, and many others that enjoy working and coding
for next to nothing (or nothing at all) to help us out and, most of the
time, they don't receive any meaningful compensation, or even a "Thank
You!". The least we, as a community, can do is to do right by them.
Hiroshi understands this now (I think/hope - stilted language
translations), and the content has been restored, as well as the faith in
the self-policing nature of this community...OUR community.

So, for the angst I've caused, forgive me. I would do the same for any
Newtoneer.

Regards,

Gary

There's also a big difference between being honest and being self
serving - it's to OUR advantage to deal with such infractions without
letting Hiiroshi know, but it's the better thing to do to comply with
Hiroshi's request in the first place. If someone doesn't comply from
the start - it's HIROSHI'S JOB TO FIX IT, NOT OURS, we don't own IP
rights to his code, we do not own the right to distribute or sell the
code, and afair his software license didn't explicitly tell us to
handle his dirtywork. We have no right to go futzing with Gilgamesh's
or Hiroshi's business, though we obviously want / feel entitled to.

We DID think of the consequences - do you think Hiroshi would be more
annoyed that the community reported a violation of his wishes, or if we
tried to cover it up? Him finding out the latter, especially if we
tried to hide it, would destroy his faith in the NTLK community -
whereas reporting it strengthens us, shows we are willing to risk him
yanking the driver in order to do what we consider right / what is in
accordance with his wishes.

I can run a red light without hurting anyone in the process - then
again, I could cause a 40 car pileup with no good coming from it - so
why not fail to give me a ticket or suspend my drivers license? By your
logic since I didn't hit anyone going through the light everything is
fine. WHat about next time?

Wasn't even a problem? I beg to differ - why else would we feel
inclined to do something about it? Damn straight we should've told
Hiroshi right away, as WELL as overstepped our bounds and warned
Gilgamesh about it.
