[I just noticed this article from the March 10th Toronto Star,
reporting a sad event of great significance to NewtonTalkers around the
world:]

Goodbye, Mr. Poutine

Fernand Lachance defied the odds. His invention, the greasy, gooey
mishmash of fries, gravy and cheese curds known as poutine, was his
favourite dish, yet he lived to age 86. Canadian Press reports that
Lachance died last month in a nursing home in Warwick, Que. The
legendary restaurateur created Quebec's signature dish in 1957, when a
trucker insisted on having fries and cheese dumped in the same bag.
(The sauce came later.) Lachance named it poutine, Quebeçois slang for
a mess or pudding. It has since become a cross-Canada, fast-food
favourite — despite the 60 grams of fat packed in a single serving. So,
au revoir to a true Canadian. His creation not only lives on, it has
evolved into multicultural spinoffs like so-called Italian poutine,
with meat sauce, and Chinese poutine, with meat and barbecue sauces.

SUSAN SAMPSON

[The accompanying photo, which doesn't appear online, is of a
white-haired and happy-looking M. Lachance proudly holding an enormous
plate of the stuff at the poutine anniversary celebration in 1997. It
looks like fries covered with huge cheese curds, but no gravy. That
last bit probably explains why he made it to 86.]
