Don't forget that the Newton knows how to to styled (that is
graphic-based) text on an Imagewriter. That's not the same kind of
printing as to an Epson FX-80. It also knows how to speak Postscript to
talk to Laserwriters. Epson FX-80s don't speak that either.
It may be a simple hardware protocol change if every printer used the
same protocol to print images or shift from normal to bold type, but
that ain't the case, and never has been.
