[NTLK] eMate acceleration

I am hoping to install a faster crystal in my eMate, and reviewed
Stephanie's site and noted that she complained of her impatience in
removing the crystal which resulted in ripping the solder pads off the
circuit board, another list member in private correspondence made the
same confession.

I had two dead eMate motherboards to practice on, and on the first took
considerable pains to not be too impatient. At either end of the
crystal two small beads of solder are visible. I carefully melted and
wicked as much solder as I could but the crystal remained tight, I
continued this process in short sessions to not overheat the board and
finally one end seemed slightly loose. I gripped the crystal and
heated the other end and when it released the solder pad on that end
came with it.

The crystal is mounted on a plastic pad and the wire leads (actually
flat ribbons) pass through it and are bent to either end with almost
three sixteenths inch soldered under the pad. I made a second attempt
with the same results, but I seem to see evidence of adhesive holding
the pad to the circuit board.

Has anyone had success in removing the crystal. If so please share any
tips leading to success. I am now considering a small rotary grinder
to cut the crystal away from the plastic spacer.
