In my experience, and using Windows 2k (which is not all that
different from XP, driver-wise), both USB and PC-card/Cardbus are
still somewhat of a hit-and-miss affair, occasionally doing
unpredictable things with your computer.
Linux is a lot more well-behaving in that area; at least Linux will
not pretend to do things that are dangerous or downright impossible.
Newton is even better still, offering true plug-and-run capability.
But YMMV, as usual.
