To be fair, though, the Shuttles go through regular upgrade periods,
during which new technology is installed, so while the basic shell is
the same, a lot of the technology, from the cockpit displays to the
Space Shuttle Main Engines, is actually relatively new.
As to outliving their lifespan, depends on how you count. Each Orbiter
was supposed to be able to make 100 flights, and none have come even
close.
As to a replacement, the Shuttles will stop flying ~2010, with a new
vehicle ready ~2014.
