I wanted to clear off the Newton because I notice that the previous
owner has some junk in there, and basically just to get a fresh start
and avoid any weirdness.

If I follow the procedure you recommended, wouldn't the 'cruft' get
backed up onto the card and restored in the end? Or can I only backup
the packages and not any data?
