It's unlikely to be a B and G thing. Most of the G type routers can
step back and do B too, although it tends to slow down the whole LAN.

Most likely is you didn't have the right SSID entered, or you didn't
have a proper internet setup. Or the WLAN was looking for an SSL
function on it's sign in page...
