Re: [NTLK] [Q] GPS map making tutorials/links?

For me it was a rather lengthgy process with multiple iterations to get
Mapcontainers I was finally happy with.

1) starting with searching for the right map material (and I used fine
resolution maps on paper that I scanned in). I do not think it is so easy to
use map material off the web, because of several parameters you simply do
not know like type of projection and reference coordinates.

2) processing the scan (making it the right size and resolution, have the
right overlapping for Map tiles, reducing to greyscale and making it optimal
readible on the Newt.

3) preparing and finally calculating the parameters (using the reference
points)
The little parameter tools simply fail if the input is not correct.

4) running NTK an creating the Map container

5) loading it onto the Newt

6) making a test drive and let GPS Map record the real drive path (which was
of course offset from the streets in the Map)

7) performing an iteration on the parameters to correct the map parameters

8) starting over with 3) through 5)

9) luckily step 6) was not needed to be repeated because you can display the
stored route on the corrected map and directly see the result

10) Sometimes I was lucky and the result was fine, otherwise I had to start
over with step 3)

Sorry for the quiet boring excurse for those who are not familiar with (and
maybe intersted in) making their own Maps.

Cheers
Johannes
