Congrats and welcome!

>Use internet setup. Added 'Generic' config. Seems ok. (but is never
>'checked'...add...w/check...x....then no check...WHY?

There's something about installing NIE and card drivers in the proper
order... Check the Newton-FAQ for pointers, also trawling the Wiki
might help (I'm thinking of
http://tools.unna.org/wikiwikinewt/index.php/InterNet and
http://tools.unna.org/wikiwikinewt/index.php/MacOSXConnection as good
starters... there's also stuff on setting up Simple Mail, GPS,
Bluetooth and a gazillion other things...).

One important thing any newcomer to the platform can do to help all the
community:
When you try out new stuff, keep notes where you've found what
packages and which FAQs and How-Tos, and log every step you do. This
will help to retrace your steps if you're not successful on first try
(which is likely ;=} ), also you can create a Wikipage and populate it
with your log and links after you're successful, creating your own
How-To to help the next person who wants to try this or that. And there
are a lot of things that aren't covered by the Wiki yet!
Supporting the Wiki is especially important as a lot of things have
moved ahead in the last two years, and the FAQ not having been updated
since ages (last time I heard id would be updated was Fall 2003, but no
show, so I put my faith in the Wiki).

>Still, if the 1mb ceiling isn't too hard, I intend to make books.

What 1 MB ceiling? Is that all internal storage left to you, or what?
In any case -- Russ Bravo and Frank Gruendel still have 20 MB storage
cards for reasonable price (was it EUR 25,-- incl. international
shipment?), having one or two of those much recommended.

>Have
>downloaded the 2 pdfs mentioned in posts few days back .. Kadre sci/fi
>and cultural analysis..haven't read them yet ;)

Me neither, so I'm glad somebody took up my challenge! I really want to
read those... Willing to swap again anything I've newtyfied (see sig).
;=}

> I have the Book making tutorial (very detailed. will have to study up
>more than the quick scan I gave it)

Book making has some sects... Some believe in Paperback at
creation-tool (not so many nice layout options, can't deal with
pictures). Matt Kowalczyk and I work in Newton Paper Press (good
WYSIWYG-tool, brilliant for starters... and if it's stable for you, it
may be all you need). Digital Dan, who wrote the tutorial, prefers
Bookmaker and NTK, which is more complex but offers even more options.
There are a bundle of pages up on the Wiki that will help you get
started.

>SOMEBODY has posted alot of books out there..Neuromancer..IRobot...

Oh, there are many books splattered all over the web! Mind you, people
started making books right after the Newt came out in '93, so we have
over a dozen years worth in titles -- but no consilidated Library. UNNA
has a lot, but books are pretty much orphaned there, and you gotta know
what you want. UNNA has some mirrors that have a lot of stuff, too
(AMUG). Planet Newton... Tek-Ed's server that was down for a couple
days, but is back again...
And then there is the Temporary Newton Library
http://www.stillnewt.org/library, which Matt-the-K and myself are
maintaining with submissions and help from many Newtonians. I think
this will be a place worth watching...

>I'd like to add to that list as soon as I can.

If you have any new titles completed and want to contribute them to
the library, please check the submission guideline at
http://www.stillnewt.org/library/Submission%20Guideline.txt , there's
also some pointers on styles and readability.

>I have 10mb WebPage space available from Verizon. If I can get THAT
>working (have only seen their cookie cutter pre-fab tools...which might
>be sufficient) it is likely to be Newt oriented.

Great! You could put your books up at the library, and link from your
page... Run a progress blog... Whatever is fun to you...

>Acquired Wallstreet PB late Nov 2003 (Rev 1--233mhz...no L2
cache...12in
>dual scan) 192mb RAM/10g HD. OS 9.1..33.6 dialup (never got 56k..don't
>know why) Used MS IE 5.1. (grrr)

You now using Firefox? If not, try it. Sleek, fast, solid -- actually
made the web experience bearable on my old Win PII 180 MHz 192 MB...

>So, in about 6 wks elapsed time, I have gone from 1 WS PB running OS
>9.1..surfing a painfully slow 33.6...to a virtual new 'Jag'..DSL..

DSL + Firefox = powerful team!

>AND the Newton. Please forgive slips as I try to assimilate and become
>versatile on the various platforms.

No swea', mate! And a hearty welcome again (see, I'm super-polite
today, 'coz I'm already droolin' after those books, hehe...),
