Finding a laptop was not hard at all. But I've spent a
frustrating couple of hours on trying to make this work
on a PC running XP SP2 without any success.

If you try it, and if you have the impression that your PC
crashes as soon as you enter the number of the Orinoco
card in Alchemy, you are probably mistaken. It's just so
busy that nothing else, even the cursor, works anymore. Wait
at least 5 minutes. Eventually, the Alchemy window will show
what John describes, but will not update the card in the end.
After that you'll have control of your computer back.
I tried it with a Lucent Silver Turbo, and it worked like
a charm in a couple of seconds, so the problem is probably with
the card, not with my setup.

I could try it with my old Windows 98 laptop if someone could
kindly point me to a place where I can download the Windows
driver(s) in the required version 7.43.0.9.

If someone can lend me a Lucent Bronze (without the "Turbo"),
I'll gladly try out if it works with this card. I'd even send it back
at my expense.

Frank
