In any event, the old school mac way of keeping track of which program
created a file, and what kind of data is present, was only understood
by the old school mac.

The dumbing down of mac in this regard has little to do with the new
mac's 100% unix underpinning.

It's simply a matter of 95% of the computers out there not "getting"
the type and creator coding system. Therefore Apple has reasonably (if
annoyingly) chosen to use a much simpler system, the can potentially
make things easier in across the internet/cross platform situations.

Of course people still find ways to screw this up, like using the
wrong extensions, or good old microsoft brain damage.

I think the future is in letting the computer figure out what kind of
file it actually is, much like the dataviz maclink products do/did.

PS in any event if you get the "no valid bill of materials" message
just cancel, and you newton package is still fine!
