I have struggled to get usable Newton sync using NCU on Windows XP.
I got a 50% success rate using four copies of Slowdown - packages would
go over OK, and I would occasionally be able to get NewtWorks documents
back after 3 or 4 attempts. Of course, Slowdown brings my PC to its
knees, so I can't do anything else, and backups etc - forget it.
I was toying with going down the Basilisk route, but I have not much
free time and a limited knowledge of MacOS, so that wasn't ideal.
Tonight, I loaded a copy of Microsoft Virtual PC, and installed a
Windows 98SE virtual machine. I installed NCU, and mapped my machines
serial port through to the VM.
Lo and behold, I have 90% sync successes now. NewtWorks documents flying
back and forth, backups, everything.
It must be a combination of the inherent slowdown of the VM (though it
feels responsive enough), the serial translation going on, and NCU
running on a platform it was originally aimed at.
MS Virtual PC is available for a trial download - if you have an old
Win98 or 95 CD knocking about, it may be worth a try. The real beauty is
that during Newton syncs, the machine is still responsive, so you can
remain productive. The VM can be hibernated in a running state, so
firing it up for Newton syncs direct to my machine is as quick as
starting any other program.

David Cohen.
