Hello Everybody,
[I'm recapping and commenting on a few postings that were made yesterday.
It's a bit 'Bierce-esque' in its tone]

I am in complete agreement with Warren, with regard to Ebay wh_at_res using the
Newtontalk list to acquire cheaper Newton merchandise for resale. It's not
been too bad recently, but I know of one fellow in the Midwest who is trying
really hard to blend into the woodwork. (Hint: Geographically, look about 120
miles to the west/southwest of me.)

On the flip side, there are a few people who are legitimately trying to help
the Newton Community through the development and sale of Newton hardware
accessories: Jeff McMurtie with his audio I/O upgrade, and PBA Man, with his serial
adapter and eMate memory upgrades are two prime examples.

"I am a little concerned that while most of the people on this list are
sincere individuals there are others while not in good standing have access
and
others who are VERY COMMERCIAL ie: they buy cheap from list members and
advertise
at inflated prices. I do not believe either of these cases are in the best
interest of the community.

The only other list I can think of that comes close to this one would be AOL
circa 1964 when it was mainly a Mac List.

Vaughn, a relatively recent newcomer to our ranks, commented on the 'One-Way
Street', as it applies to support and help for anybody on the Newtontalk list.
I commend you sir, for voluntarily documenting your own learning process, to
help future Newton newcomers maximize their Newton experience!

Admittedly, some of us have special circumstances that place us in a better
position to contribute time and effort to supporting the Newton Community.
However, there is no reason whatsoever for people to feel that they can't
contribute to the Community in some way. A few network administrators out there are in
an ideal position, from an experimental standpoint, to develop new solutions,
but they don't do d!ck to help develop new workarounds for problems faced by
Newton users the world over. The need for alternatives to the standard syncing
software tools, NCU, RCU, etc, is critical, especially on the PC side! Then,
there is the slew of members whose day jobs are in the academic community. Why
don't any of these individuals publish eBooks of their research findings,
reviews of other scholarly works, etc? If you have access to specialized
knowledge, why not share a tiny bit of it with us? The illustrators really p!$$ me
off. If you're an illustrator, and you don't occasionally contribute artwork,
illustrated eBooks, maps, clip art, etc to the Newton Community, shame on you for
even having the gall to attach your job title to your name when you post on
this list!

Now, for the touchy-feely people out there who feel threatened by somebody
'telling it like it is' and thinking that everything I have to say is negative,
here is a smiley face for you to look at: :O)

I love the Newton Community. There are some great people out there. We have
some of the sharpest minds and some of the most creative, innovative talent
available anywhere! Let's try to utilize it more effectively, people!

Okay, I think that covers the main Newton topics on my mind this morning. I'm
feeling so good that I'll leave the street-language-in-postings issue alone
for now. [I think my blood sugar's getting low. I have to go eat hash browns
and then shovel snow for an hour and a half] Have a great day!

Warmest regards,

Matt K.
